Cost and emissions pathways towards net-zero climate impacts in aviation

چکیده
Aviation emissions are not on a trajectory consistent with Paris Climate Agreement goals. We evaluate the extent to which fuel pathways—synthetic fuels from biomass, synthetic green hydrogen and atmospheric CO2, direct use of liquid hydrogen—could lead aviation towards net-zero climate impacts. Together continued efficiency gains contrail avoidance, but without offsets, such an energy transition could reduce lifecycle CO2 by 89–94% compared year-2019 levels, despite 2–3-fold growth in demand 2050. The sector manage associated cost increases, ticket prices rising no more than 15% no-intervention baseline leading suppression less 14%. These pathways will require discounted investments order US$0.5–2.1 trillion over 30 yr period. However, our CO2-equivalent only 46–69%; action is required mitigate non-CO2 Decarbonization difficult due increasing current lack scalable mitigation technologies. This Analysis examines system improved aircraft technologies, avoidance.

Climate Stabilization at 2°C and Net Zero Carbon Emissions
The goal to stabilize global average surface temperature at lower than 2°C above pre-industrial level has been extensively discussed in climate negotiations. A number of publications state that achieving this goal will require net anthropogenic carbon emissions (defined as anthropogenic emissions minus anthropogenic sinks such as carbon capture and sequestration and reforestation) to be reduced...
متن کاملEmissions pathways, climate change, and impacts on California.
The magnitude of future climate change depends substantially on the greenhouse gas emission pathways we choose. Here we explore the implications of the highest and lowest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change emissions pathways for climate change and associated impacts in California. Based on climate projections from two state-of-the-art climate models with low and medium sensitivity (Paral...
متن کاملStabilizing climate requires near-zero emissions
[1] Current international climate mitigation efforts aim to stabilize levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. However, human-induced climate warming will continue for many centuries, even after atmospheric CO2 levels are stabilized. In this paper, we assess the CO2 emissions requirements for global temperature stabilization within the next several centuries, using an Earth system model of...
متن کاملAnalysis and Optimization using Renewable Energies to Get Net-Zero Energy Building for Warm Climate
Due to low energy price, economic optimization of consumption has no justification for users in Iran. Nowadays, the issue of ending fossil fuels, production of greenhouse gases and the main role of building in consumption of considerable amount of energy has drawn the focus of global researches to a new concept called net zero energy building. In this study, modeling, simulation and energy anal...
